SFM: What inspired you to produce the Diversity of Literacy you've loosed into the world?
Gina Humber: A lot of things inspired me to write this book, but a few of the prominent reasons were my students and my daughter. I am a special education teacher, it is extremely almost impossible to find children's books that showcase us all, and for me that includes: special needs, overweight, Asian, dark skinned girls, Caribbean and all types of religions. I wanted a book that represents most classrooms, and if it didn't look like your classroom or home, you having this book changed the fabric and discussion in your environment. That discussion needs to happen, all children NEED to be seen, and included in the fabric of our society. My daughter played a role, because as a brown skinned girl she didn't accept herself when she was younger, she kept comparing herself to me. Over time and with a lot of encouragement she grew to accept her own beauty, and still see mine without competing or denying her own self-worth.
SFM: Finish this statement. The look and likes of beauty...
Gina Humber: The look and likes of beauty are in front of us everyday, there is no such thing as "plain Janes" Our uniqueness is our facial fingerprint that no one else has, and in that there is beauty.
SFM: If God gave you the power to change one thing in this world for one day (24hrs), what would you use your power for and why?
Gina Humber: Hmmmmm good question, I would use it to forgive. No explanation needed....the power of that stands alone.
SFM: What message would you like to share with women and young girls?
Gina Humber: My message is simple but rarely done....so I pray these words enter the hearts of those reading this, and it thrives and grows and never dies...I want young women/ girls to know, if you deem yourself beauty, on the inside and out, never diminish someone else. Allow your beauty to be a reflection of what you see in others based on how you see you. Always uplift your community and see challenging opportunities as a method to grow. Enjoy the process of loving yourself and others, it's a beautiful ride...if you can just open your eyes and heart!
SFM: Are there any upcoming events for Gina Humber you wish to overshare?
Gina Humber: I have a Special Needs fair happening in Yonkers, NY and book and author luncheon in CT. So excited about these events happening this month, but I have a lot of events, please go to my website to find out the latest events. I try to do events which highlight children, so you're sure to have fun!
