The education you received yesterday is not the same curriculum our scholar babies are receiving today. Children are inundated with the pressure of social media at an age unfavorable towards their education. There is a new mandate instituted by lawmakers known as the Common Core Standards that all 50 states are encouraged to adopt since 2009. Common Core is a set of scholastic standards used consistently to foster an efficacious academic lifestyle for K-12 after graduation from high school into preparation for college. This new curriculum keeps all states and educators on the same page and path. If you live in New York and move to Illinois with your children, they will be able to pick up where they left off with any subject. Presently only 42 of the 50 American states have fully implemented the guidelines of Common Core Standards. Academic subjects are dressed in a more recondite and rigorous attire of instructive standards with Common Core. Children are anticipated to retain a gigantic amount of information in Math Workshop, Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop. Where do they find the time to have social media accounts with all this new learning going on?
I beseech you brothers and sisters to work with our scholar babies at home in a joint effort to ensure they are challenged by their teachers and you. It is your job to do your part. The buzz around the playground is some of our descendants are on Facebook at the age of 7-12 years old which is very inappropriate. What happen to teaching them how to use proper social skills? What is so wrong with talking on the telephone? Please tell me if it makes sense for our scholar babies to have a Facebook account when they are struggling in any subject in school. Social media time could be used for them to practice their Common Core strategies to become better in math, reading or writing. The mind of a child’s schema is alive when allowed to grow and constantly change. Schema is the background knowledge of all the information in your brain. Students make connections using what they already know by using their schema. Social media is a desultory intake, edifying distraction in young minds.
Reading is a lifelong tool our scholar babies can use in every day life. Reading is the common denominator of a polished mind. In order to do math you have to be able to read the problem. The purpose of a textbook is to inform, persuade or entertain you in some way. The motive is to prepare our intellectual babies to succeed and think independently, intensively and critically. Please don’t let social media negate that progress.
