Laura-Ann was always accustomed to an atemporal childhood of love, unity and great family holidays with her 7 other sisters and brothers. Her parents raised them that way. Growing up, the Dexter family celebrated all of the American holidays together. Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas were particularly special days for the Dexter family. Mr. & Mrs. Dexter were married on Thanksgiving; all of their children were born in the month of November and December. Papa Dexter was a Veteran. Laura-Ann is the baby of the family; single with no kids. Her career keeps her busy. When she isn't working she is mentoring others or helping people do something positive with their lives. Her sister Leslie is a few years older than Laura-Ann but she is married with 5 kids. Her 3 older brothers; Kirk, Mark and John are also married with their own big families. Her 3 older sisters (Diamond, Venus and Diana) have their own big families. Papa Dexter is no longer a special part of their holiday tradition as he passed away a few years ago. His absence changed the dynamics of the family a little bit. Laura-Ann usually spends her holidays with her mother. Mrs. Dexter cooks the main dishes. Laura-Ann brings the side dishes over to contribute. If her aunts Carmen and Alexia invites her mom over, Laura-Ann would be by herself a lot of times on the holidays. In that case, her mom would let her know she cooked but was invited out somewhere else; letting Laura-Ann know she could come over and eat at her house.
Mama Dexter: (Calling Laura-Ann)
Hey baby, are you coming over to eat? I’m going over Carmen’s house for Thanksgiving. I will be back before dawn.
Laura-Ann:
Yeah mama…I guess I will stop by there.
Mama Dexter:
Stop by! Aren’t you bringing over the side dishes? Are you okay, I love you! It will get better Laura-Ann; I miss your father too.
Laura-Ann:
It’s not just that. Every year we are not together. I wish I was 10 years old again. At least we were all together on the holidays. Did they forget they have another family; us!
Mama Dexter:
Laura-Ann, I understand. Your brother and sisters are married with their own families now. Kirk, Mark and John always spend the holidays with their wives side of the family. You know your sisters are doing their own thing as well.
Laura-Ann:
They can all come over to your house like we use to do when dad was here. I hate the holidays! I really do! They act like they can’t rotate. I will be over there in a few minutes. I am waiting on my cornbread to finish.
Mama Dexter:
Well, okay dear. I wish things were different. I am so sorry you feel that way Laura-Ann. I probably won’t be here when you get here but I will be back later to be with you. I love you!
Laura-Ann:
Okay….love you too mama! Thank you.
Laura-Ann walks into her mom’s kitchen to put the food on the counter. She goes into the living room.

Laura-Ann:

Carmen: (Kissing Laura on the cheeks)
Hey baby girl! I had to see this moment. Your mother and I have being praying for this!
So, Laura-Ann received all the love-hugs and warm kisses her heart desired; being with family (40 people) on Thanksgiving Day. The main dish on their menu was the aroma of love permeating in the air. Mama Dexter had a spacious house. They played games, watched movies all night and ate. Mama Dexter spoke with the family and asked them to come together again for Laura-Ann this year. They all agreed to start a new family tradition. It was a Happy Thanksgiving…indeed!
