I was listening to WBEZ talk radio the other day and I heard an announcement about the Chicago Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) providing their legal assistance to protesters. The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago at the United Center this week (August 19-22). People are protesting the war between Israel and Garza outside of the Democratic Convention. The NLG will be on stand-by with their lawyers and law students to aid anyone who is arrested by the police. The NLG will be in the shadows of the protest monitoring the event.
I'm not going to lie; I think it is a great idea to ensure that protesters voices are all heard and protected. Especially the help from the lawyers. I wrote something similar regarding this idea. I did feel some kind of way when I first heard about it. I was thinking about all the melanated people that protested tons of social issues and the murders of Eric Gardner, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Freddie Gray and so many others. Where was the National Lawyers Guild during those times? Why didn't that organization help with the other protestors? Black Lives Matters protestors did not receive assistance from the NLG.
It would be nice to see the melanated lawyers come together to help out people in their community who are participating in peaceful protest.
